Solid Wood Floors
Solid wood floors are one solid piece of wood, generally 3/4” thick. Due to size and the fact that wood is a natural product, it means solid wood floors are sensitive to temperature change and moisture. This requirement also limits the areas solid wood can be installed, and if needed, can generally be re-coated and refinished several times throughout their lifetime. Solid wood flooring must be installed at or above grade on wooden subfloors.
Engineered Wood Floors
Engineered wood floors are made from the same species as solid wood floors. While they produce the same look, they ultimately have the advantage of being structurally stable. The planks have cross-ply construction that reduces the contraction and expansion of planks caused by variations in humidity and temperature. This style allows engineered floors to be installed on any level in the home. Some of these floors can be re-coated if needed.
Pre-Finished Wood Floors
With job site finish, several days are required to install, stain, and finish the flooring. Pre-finished wood floors have engineered in benefits that cannot be duplicated with a finish on site floor. Pre-finished floors are less messy, can be completed on the same day, and are easily installed.
