A new wood floor would look great in your home or office but a few simple questions need to be answered to determine what kind of wood flooring would be best.
- What type of subfloor is the new floor going over (i.e. wood or concrete)?
- What species of wood do you like?
- What size plank do you like?
Hardwood floors are produced in two types, solid and engineered. To help determine which type of floor will work best for your situation depends upon the location within your home and the type of subfloor the room has. Each of these types come in a wide variety of wood species and plank sizes to fit your own personal style and taste.
Solid Wood Floors
Solid wood floors are one solid piece of wood and are generally ¾” thick. Because of this and the fact that wood is a natural product, means solid wood floors are sensitive to moisture and temperature changes. Solid wood flooring should only be installed above grade (above ground) over approved wooden subfloors and must be nailed-down. This requirement limits the areas solid wood can be installed. Solid wood floors, if needed, can generally be re-coated and refinished several times throughout their lifetimes.
Engineered Wood Floors
Engineered wood floors are made from the same species as solid wood floors and produce the same look; however they have the advantage of being more structurally stable. This structural stability comes from the way engineered wood flooring is manufactured. The planks have cross-ply construction, which reduces the expansion/contraction of planks caused by variations in humidity and temperature. This construction style allows engineered floors to be installed on any level in the home. Some of these floors can be re-coated if needed.
Why should you install pre-finished wood floors versus job-site (unfinished) wood floors?
With job-site finish floors several days are required to install, stain and finish the flooring. During the staining and finish phases you may have to stay somewhere else overnight due to the odor of the products used. Pre-finished floors are less messy and can be installed and completed the same day. A factory applied finish with aluminum oxide or other scratch resist additive is extremely durable and can not be duplicated with a job-site finish.
