Durability is determined by more than the type of fiber used to create the carpet. When browsing through samples, look for the TPI number on the label. The higher the turn per inch number, the better the carpet. If the TPI is 5, the fibers are twisted around each other 5 times. Mostly, fibers have a TPI from 3.5 to 6.0. Also note the thickness of the carpet, measured from its surface to its backing, as well as the density of the fibers. Carpet with a short pile height and a dense pile is the most durable. Also, choosing a new carpet based on how the room will be used and what kind of traffic it will receive goes a long way in guaranteeing durability.
