Hardwood flooring is attractive and long-lasting

Hardwood flooring is not only beautiful, but it also promotes a healthy indoor environment. This floor covering does not trap dust, dirt, or allergens, and what's more, it's easy to clean and maintain. When the floor becomes worn, it can be refinished so it looks new again. It's not unusual to find original hardwood floors in homes that were built in the nineteenth century. Family-owned Bisek Interiors boasts a 5,200 square foot interior design showroom in Montgomery, Minnesota, that is filled with displays and products. We offer a great selection of wood flooring, carpet, laminate, tile, and vinyl. We also provide alternative floorings like epoxy and rubber.

Wood floor options

You have three options if you are interested in wood flooring. First, you can choose solid wood strips or planks that were milled from one piece of hardwood. Wood species that have a high rating on the Janka hardness test are the most durable. These include maple, oak, and cherry. There are two types of solid wood flooring. The first one is finished by installers and the second one is finished in the factory. Installers do not have access to the high-powered sealers that are used in a factory. Therefore, factory-applied finishes are backed by longer warranties than on-site finishes. Engineered wood is a third, less costly, flooring option. A thin layer of hardwood is bonded to the base material to create a good alternative to solid wood. This practical flooring can be installed in a basement, but it is not recommended for kitchens or bathrooms.

Installation

It takes one day to install finished wood flooring. In contrast, it takes about one week to install, sand, stain, and seal unfinished wood strips and planks in the home. Then it takes about one more week for the floor to acclimate to its new environment. Choose unfinished flooring if:

  • You like a floor with a flush, not a beveled, look.
  • You’re undertaking a major renovation or new construction.
  • You desire a less common wood or stain that is not available in a finished style.

Usually, solid wood flooring is nailed to the subfloor while engineered wood flooring is connected to float over the subfloor. Existing flooring must be removed before installation. If the subfloor is damaged or uneven, installers will repair or level it.
